Teacher Education Program
Curriculum Notes
- These checksheets reflect current
requirements -- that is requirements for
students entering college on or after Fall
semester, 2006. In some cases there are
minor differences in checksheets due to
program changes from year to year. Students
should consult regularly with their advisers
regarding these changes.
- Effective fall 2002, all ECE/ELEM students
regardless of program, are required to
complete 12 hours of science,
12
hours of math, 12
hours of Social Science and 12 hours of
English/Language Arts.
This meets the state of Alabama's definition
to be highly qualified under
No
Child Left Behind.
- Effective June 2005,
all secondary and P-12 candidates seeking
certification are required to complete a major
consisting of a minimum of 32 semester hours
of which 19 must be at the 300-400 level to be
recommended as Highly Qualified under the
No Child Left Behind Legislation.
- FCS 391 Child Development replaces EDF 380
Child Psychology in all programs.
- ED 415 Introduction to Inclusive ECE/ELEM
Classroom replaces ED 400 Introduction to
Teaching in Elementary Education in the
Elementary/Early Childhood Programs.
- ED 407 Exceptional Learner in the P-12 and
Secondary Programs replaces ED 471
Introduction to Exceptional Children in the
Secondary/P-12 Programs
- ED 408 Exceptional Learners in the Early
Childhood and Elementary Classroom replaces
ED 471 Introduction to Exceptional Children
in the Elementary/Early Childhood Programs.
- MUS 255 replaces MUS 121 in the
Elementary/Early Childhood Programs.
- ED 335 is required for all education
majors except Music. Music majors have the
option to take ED 335 or other computer
courses noted on the appropriate checksheet.
- For secondary students, phases must be
taken as indicated.
- For secondary students, ED 450 must
be taken the semester immediately preceding
the internship with the
rest of the co-requsites for Phase II.
- All transfer work in professional
education must be evaluated and approved by
the appropriate Department Chair or the
Office of Teacher Education Services.
- TE 412 has been removed from the
Elementary and Early Childhood Programs.
KNES 480 should be substituted for this class.
- Effective Fall 2001, all secondary
programs will admit students in cohorts.
Students are expected to follow the phases
outlined in this document under suggested
course sequence for secondary programs.
- Effective May 14, 2002, the CMEE is waived
as a requirement for TEP admission.
However, candidates admitted without a CMEE
or AFY students will be required to
successfully complete the APTT for
certification.
- Effective Fall 2003, all Early
Childhood, Elementary and Elementary/Early
Childhood, Elementary/Collaborative majors admitted to the Teacher
Education Program will be required to have
earned a grade of "C" or better in
each general studies course taken for admission,
retention and completion of the Teacher
Education Program at the University of
Montevallo. Regardless of gpa, any grade earned
lower than a "C" will result in denied
admission and/or removal from the TEP.
- Effective Fall 2004
Early Childhood, Elementary and
Elementary/Early Childhood, Elementary/
Collaborative, Secondary and P-12 fields are
required to successfully complete the math,
reading and writing parts of the Alabama
Prospective Teacher Test (APTT) as a
prerequisite for admission to the internship
and for Alabama certification.
- All applicants applying for initial
Alabama certification between April 14 and
December 31, 2005 are required to take the
Praxis II for the teaching field(s) in which
certification is sought. Applicants
January 1, 2006 and after will be required to
passs the Praxis II with the established
cut-off scores for the field(s). A copy
of the report will need to be submitted with
the application packet. If UM is not
listed as a recipient for the score report
then the candidate will be required to submit
the report to UM.
- Effective Fall 2007 ED 401 is replaced by
ED 402 and EDF 461 is replaced by EDF 462 for
secondary teaching fields including
Kinesiology.
These checksheets have been cleared for
certification requirements and reflect programs
as submitted by the various academic
departments. If students discover discrepancies,
they should contact their department chair.
