No Child Left Behind/Highly Qualified
Students in ECE, ELEM, ECE/ELEM or ELEM/Collaborative are require to meet the state's definition of Highly Qualified which is 4x12 [12 semester hours in each of the four core areas of Math, Science, Social Science and English/Language Arts.

Secondary Teacher Preparation Overview

*As an alternative to completing the traditional undergraduate secondary education program, students in their last semester of study for a baccalaureate degree at the University of Montevallo may apply for the alternative fifth-year graduate program in secondary education, completing Phase I of the program as undergraduates. They will be required to enter Phase II in the subsequent semester, provided all requirements for graduate admission have been met.

Phase I
Pre-Professional Study

Admission

Criterion
Completion of application for admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP).
Completion of 60 hours of college work.
Completion of 48 hours of general studies with a 2.50 grade point average.
Achievement of 2.50 in all teaching field courses, with at least a “C” in all courses.
Completion of computer literacy course or its equivalent.
Successful completion of Mather-Woodcock Group Writing Test.
Successful completion speech performance course with at least a “C.”
Successful completion of English composition sequence with at least “C.”

*Students who do not have a 2.50 at the end of this phase may repeat program courses only once in order to restore the grade point average and proceed with another cohort.

Demonstration of mastery on Phase I competencies. Indication by course grade, individual course assessment (minimums established), and/or conferencing with faculty.

*Students who do not have a 2.50 at the end of this phase may repeat program courses only once in order to restore the grade point average and proceed with another cohort.

Completion of application for internship and achievement of eligibility. Applications for the internship should be completed no later than 6 weeks into Phase II.
Achievement of 2.50 overall, in the teaching field and on all program coursework (Phases I and II and May/Summer experiences).  
Successful completion of TB screening.  
Demonstration of mastery on Phase II, Diversity, and Classroom Management competencies. Indication by course grade, individual course assessment (minimums established), and/or conferencing with faculty.
Successful completion of subject matter assessment. To be decided, administered, and reported by teaching field department.
Successful completion of all sections of the Alabama Prospective Teacher Test. Math (4)

Successful completion of Professional Development Plan (PDP).  
Successful completion of exit/comprehensive exam (ED490) project. Evidence not in course grade but on assessment of final project.

*Students who do not have a 2.50 grade point average at the end of the program may repeat Phase III courses only once to restore the grade point average required for completion.
