Proper advising is essential for successful completion of the TEP. Portions of the TEP are mandated by Alabama certification requirements and other portions are mandated by University graduation requirements. Therefore, students planning to enter the TEP should consult with their advisers upon entering the University and have a program of study designed. Any variation from the approved program without the written permission of the dean of the student's college could result in failure to receive certification. Program changes that involve course substitutions must be handled by the adviser. The Course Substitution Form is located in Appendix B. The form should then be directed to the certification officer by the department chair.
After programs have been planned, subsequent regular visits should be scheduled with advisers: (1) during the pre-registration period each semester to gain approval of schedule; (2) any time a program change is considered; (3) when academic difficulties arise; and (4) when questions arise.
It should be noted that while students in secondary and P-12 programs have advisers in the colleges of their respective teaching fields, faculty and staff members in the College of Education serve as counselors listed below and are available to respond to questions when the need arises.
