Requirements for undergraduate admission to the Teacher Education Program are outlined below. Students not admitted to the TEP before the May 13, 2002, will be required to follow these guidelines:
1. General Studies and Total Hours
Students must have earned at least 60
hours of college credit before being eligible
for TEP admission. At least 48 (36 hours
for Music) of these hours must be in the general
studies program and must be completed before
admission to the TEP.
2. Grade Point Average
Students must have earned a minimum of at
least 2.50 grade point average on all
work attempted (general studies
and teaching
field, and professional studies) to be
eligible for TEP admission. Grade point averages
are calculated using only courses that fit the
checksheet for the University and SDE approved
program. Transferred courses that fit the
checksheet are used in computing gpa's.
3. Introduction to Teaching
Students must complete ED 401 or 402 (MUS
401 for music education) with at least a “C”
before being admitted to the TEP.
4. Speech Performance
Students must complete a speech performance
course (COMS 101 or its equivalent) with at
least a “C” before being admitted to the TEP.
5. Teacher Education Interviews
When TEP applications are processed, students
are notified of their status and should
immediately sign up for an interview. The
interview generally includes information on the
applicant's personality, interests, and
aptitudes based on the College of Education's
Conceptual Framework and consistent with the
requirements for successful teaching. Failure
to obtain a passing score in three attempts
results in the student being ineligible for
admission to TEP at any level. It is the
student's responsibility sign up by the posted
deadline. Failure to do so will result in a
delay of the interview, which may postpone
admission to TEP. (See Appendix B
for more information).
6. English 101 and 102
Students must complete six hours of
Foundations of Writing Courses (or transfer in
equivalent courses) with at least a “C”
before being admitted to the TEP.
7. Writing Performance
Students must complete successfully pass
the Mather-Woodcock Writing Assessment with a
minimum score of 4 in each of the three tested
areas [Total, Basic &
Expressive]. The test
is administered four times
per year in September, December, March and June.
Test dates will be posted on the board outside
the Office of Teacher Education Services (Wills
207). Only three attempts are allowed. Failure
to obtain a passing score in three attempts
results in the student being ineligible for
admission to TEP at any level. It is the
student's responsibility sign up by the posted
deadline. Failure to do so will result in a
delay of test administration, which may postpone
admission to TEP. Applications are available
in the Office of Teacher Education Services.
8. General
Studies for ECE, ELEM, ECE/ELEM and ELEM/Collaborative
Majors
Effective Fall 2003, all students in
Early Childhood, Elementary, Early
Childhood/Elementary or Elementary/
Collaborative, on a 2003/2004 checksheet, will
be required to have a minimum grade of "C" in
all general studies courses. Students must
attain a “C” in all general studies courses
taken before admission to the Teacher Education
Program as a condition of admission. Retention
will be maintained only if
students earn a grade of "C" or better in any
remaining general studies courses. Students
removed from the Teacher Education Program will
be readmitted once the course(s) is/are retaken
and a grade of "C" is earned. Other
requirements, such as gpa's, also apply.
