Alabama Prospective Teacher Test
The new teacher basic skills exam
was
first administered in December
2002. Any candidate seeking initial
certification at any level will be required to
successfully complete all components of the exam
before certification will be granted by the
state.
Undergraduate students who have previously taken
the CMEE may be exempt from this requirement.
Currently UM requires the APTT for internship
admission, and will become a TEP admission
requirement in fall 2007.
Program
Completion Examination
The Alabama State
Board of Education
requires an exit exam for
all teacher education
students at the
completion of their
program. Any student not
taking the exam will be
expected to sign a
statement waiving their
eligibility to be
recommended for
certification by the
University of Montevallo,
at anytime in the future.
Failure to sign the form
or take the exam will
result in forfeiture of
recommendation for
certification from the
University of Montevallo.
Each program area is
responsible for
examination process and
procedure.
Praxis II
You are required to successfully
complete the Praxis II with the designated
cut-off score for your field for Alabama
Certification.
Applying for
Alabama Certification
Applications for
certification are
available in the Office
of Teacher Education
Services. Students have
five years from program
completion to apply for
the certificate. Once the
Class B Certificate is
awarded, it is valid for
five years and is
renewable based on
compliance with state
requirements.
Certification
requirements are subject
to change by the State
Department of Education.
SINCE JULY 1999, ALL STUDENTS SEEKING INITIAL CERTIFICATION HAVE BEEN REQUIRED TO SUBMIT TO A BACKGROUND CHECK THROUGH THE ALABAMA BUREAU OF INVESTIGATIONS (ABI) AND FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATIONS (FBI). STUDENTS SHOULD BE REMINDED THAT A FELONY CONVICTION MAY PRECLUDE THE POSSIBILITY OF GAINING ALABAMA CERTIFICATION EVEN THOUGH, IN THE ABSENCE OF SUCH KNOWLEDGE, UM MAY HAVE RECOMMENDED CERTIFICATION.
