A major thrust of this office is guidance. Special consideration is given to career exploration, career decision-making, and the development of marketable skills.
Brochures, directories, a computerized career guidance program, tests, and other materials are available in the Career Planning and Placement Center to inform university students, faculty, and alumni about employment prospects, nature of work in an occupation, work environments, job qualifications, discrimination, preparation needed, entrance job requirements, advancement on the job, number and distribution of workers in various occupations, earnings, advantages and disadvantages of particular employment and self assessment.
Career education is a vital area of endeavor for any institution of higher education. This office facilitates the University of Montevallo mission in this respect by addressing student organizations, visiting classes, setting up displays, and keeping the campus media informed as to the latest trends in education and the labor market.
The University strives to cultivate productive working relationships with employers. The Career Center's personnel maintain personal contact with a number of prospective employers representing business, government, social agencies, education, and scientific and research centers. Appointments may be made by students through the receptionist/ secretary at the Career Center. The Coordinator of Job Location and Development assists students in finding part-time employment to help defray college expenses. Cooperative education is offered to students who qualify when placement sites are available.
The Career Center assists in the development of a credential file which contains, among other documents, an interview data sheet and references which can be reproduced and disseminated to prospective employers. (There is a minimal charge to cover the cost of mailing the credential file.) These files are housed in the center for a period of seven years and upon request will be on file indefinitely.
