Research has shown that the internship experience is the most significant component in training new teachers. To make this experience as valuable as possible, the university supervisor, the cooperating teacher, the intern, and the principal must work as a team.  The internship in teaching provides an opportunity for all those involved to make a contribution to the teaching profession, for the intern to translate his/her education philosophy, psychology, and methodology into classroom practice, and for cooperating teachers to guide the development of an intern in a continuous teaching experience.

This handbook is intended to assist you in understanding the responsibilities, policies, and procedures that will guide you during your internship experience.  Those things are explicitly stated.  Not explicitly stated in the handbook are the great challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of you as you begin this culminating clinical experience.  The internship provides you the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills you have developed through the teacher education program and to apply them in a classroom context.  Your ability to make wise and informed professional decisions about your students, your instructional strategies, your curriculum, and yourself as a teacher will reflect the growth and professional maturity you have gained through the teacher education program.
