The Center for Professional Practice

Accomplishments

  • The Accounting Internship Academic program was successfully completed in concert with Dr. Tara Sudderth. Ten students participated working for five companies. Seniors working from early January through mid-March earned between $17-25 per hour plus gaining valuable experience. We are in the process of finalizing full-time job offers now.

  • Marketing Internships have been established. Two prestigious programs have been filled with SCOB students.

  • Student Touchpoints

There are currently 254 SCOB students, excluding the MBA program. Approximately 130 are in the junior/senior status. The Center has touched over 50% of this group.

  • VITA - Volunteers in Tax Assistance - was established in November, 2011. This was a collaborative effort with the IRS, the Montevallo community, and SCOB. 4 student volunteers working over thirty hours each served 30 clients. Our students now have IRS Certification for their resume, valuable tax skills and they have served others. This was a very good experience. Haley Cooedy was team captain.

  • Phi Chi Theta, the Business Fraternity. The Center has become actively involved. This important group of students has grown from 4 to over 25, and they are active. Under the leadership of President Joyce Crossley, this group taught a six week "$ Masters" to the Montevallo Boys and Girls Club.

  • Executives from the Metro Birmingham area are visiting SCOB classrooms.

  • The Center Series, a professional executive lecture series was established. Two guest speakers, Robert Beeman and Ellen Williams participated this spring. Over 125 students were involved in each lecture series.
