FAQ
Q.
I’ve just been accepted to UM. When can I make an application for
reclassification?

That depends. Y you cannot make an application until your 20th
birthday unless you are a minor of a dependent parent employed in the
state. Remember, that you cannot be reclassified if your purpose here is to
be a student.
Q.
My dad lives in another state but he pays taxes in Alabama because he runs a
business there. Would I qualify for instate reclassification?
A.
As the policy outlines, if your supporting parent pays Alabama income taxes
and claims you as a dependent then you would qualify for reclassification.

lives in Georgia. Can I get instate tuition?

That depends on who is claiming you on their taxes as their dependent.
Q.

school tuition. Do I qualify to be reclassified?
A.
Under Alabama law you would not meet the qualifications to be reclassified
Q.
I’m moving to Montevallo to begin school in the fall. I have purchased a
house in the area, can I qualify for reclassification?
A.
Maybe. The law states that you must be in Alabama for other reasons other
than attending a school. Proof of a residence to remain indefinitely is
taken into consideration but is not the only consideration made. More ties
must be made with the state of Alabama than any other state.

Carolina. Can I qualify under the military exception?
A.
No, National Guard is not recognized under Alabama law as active military
for tuition purposes.

A.
Unfortunately, we cannot break Alabama law to allow that exception.
Residents must live for at least 12 consecutive months within Alabama to be
eligible to be reclassified.
Q.
I am from Tennessee and went to school in Arkansas and was classified as in
state there, will that negatively affect my reclassification application?

inquire about your status there.
