Overview
Montevallo’s graphic identity has been further fragmented by campuswide usage of some 10 to 12 different seals, though only one official seal is registered with the Secretary of State’s office. The P.R. Office has provided official seals to dozens of offices that frequently use this image in publications, on books, on signs and on computer-generated documents.
The official seal features a lamp of learning with the date 1896 underneath it. The words University of Montevallo are printed in capital letters in a curve at the top of the circular design. The border is scalloped.
Usage
The official seal may be used to graphically represent the University. It may be used on formal publications, such as the UM Bulletin, commencement programs, diplomas, stationery, Founders’ Day programs, etc. Only the official seal should be used for these purposes.
The seal is most often reproduced with the lamp, type and concentric circles of the designs reversed against a black background. It is appropriate to foil-stamp the seal in gold and/or to emboss the design either as a blind embossment or with a combination of embossment and type.
The seal also may be printed in PMS 267 (purple) or PMS 123 (gold). The lamp, type and circles may be printed in PMS 123 or in gilt ink against a purple background or in PMS 267 against a gold background. Applications not covered above should be referred to the Public Relations Office (Ext. 6230).
Special Considerations
Though the design of the seal is fairly simple, the type used for the name of the University and for the founding date has relatively thin lines that tend to fall out when scanned or photocopied. To help provide high-quality reproduction of the seal, the Public Relations Office offers the seal on disk (Macintosh and PC formats) and through the “Public Folders” site on Microsoft Outlook, the campus’s e-mail provider. The P.R. Office also has high-resolution printer’s slicks of the logo for those who may wish to scan the image themselves.
