Overview
A Centennial logo was adopted for general usage in 1995 following a competition among graphic designers. The logo featured the name of the University, the dates 18961996 and the Centennial slogan: Alabama’s College for a New Century. A new, evolving lamp of learning provides graphic interest around which the logo was designed.
Most of the type in the design was set in the classic, traditional Garamond font.
At the conclusion of the Centennial celebration, the logo was updated to allow continued usage. The dates were removed from both sides of the lamp, and the slogan was replaced by the newly trademarked, “Alabama’s Public Liberal Arts University™.”
Usage
During UM’s Centennial celebration, the Centennial logo was used instead of the school’'s logotype on stationery, business cards, envelopes and other printed materials.
Members of the University community used it on many types of materials pertaining to the Centennial celebration.
Today, the icon is used in publications, on signs and banners, on novelty items, T-shirts, etc.
Reproduction
Most often, the updated Centennial logo is printed in black and white: however, the logo may also be printed in PMS 267 (purple) or PMS 123 (gold). The lamp could be printed in gold with the remainder of the logo printed in purple. The logo can also be reversed against a dark background.
