The University of Montevallo’s Social Work Program is one of the oldest in the Southeast. Undergraduate social work education was first instituted here in the 1920’s and taught in the summer by faculty from the University of Chicago and Simmons College. By 1926, social work was offered as a major, the first in the state of Alabama and the second program in the southeastern United States. The program has been continuously accredited by CSWE since 1974. The program has been part of a 6 program interdisciplinary department since 1989. The program has 80-90 majors, graduates between 15 – 30 students per year and has three full-time faculty. Graduates of the social work program have been instrumental in the development of child welfare, mental health, public health and aging services in the state. Graduates are highly successful in their chosen fields of practice and in graduate school.
