Office of Service Learning
and Community Engagement (OSLACE)

The Office of Service Learning and Community Engagement

The Office of Service Learning was established in Fall of 2009 through funding from Shelby County Community Services to develop and support the University of Montevallo Falcon Scholars in Action Program (UMFSIA) and other service initiatives. It was expanded to include Community Engagement in Spring of 2011. The office is collaboratively administered by Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. The goals of the OSLACE are:

·  to support faculty in integrating service into their teaching and research
·  to assist students in identifying appropriate service opportunities and support their
   development as community leaders
·  to enhance university engagement in the community
·  to serve as a clearinghouse of service opportunities for faculty, staff and students

What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is a teaching and learning method that combines service objectives and learning objectives with the focus on promoting a deeper understanding of course content through real-world experiences that positively impact the community.  These personal growth experiences provide an opportunity for critical reflective thinking and promote a sense of civic responsibility.
