Jamie Bessette has recently been named director of public relations at UM. Bessette had been serving as acting director since April 2011.

Maija Braaten, ASPIRE/Student Support Services, wrote a chapter, titled “Beginning and Ending a Tutoring Session Incorporating Active Learning Strategies,” that will be published in the College Reading and Learning Association’s Handbook for Training Peer Tutors and Mentors by Cengage Learning. The handbook is used by learning assistance professionals as a resource for developing tutoring and mentoring programs that demonstrate the high quality and standards of the College Reading and Learning Association’s guidelines.

Greg Embry has recently been named director of admissions at UM. Embry had been serving as interim director since the retirement of the previous director in 2011.

Clark Hultquist, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Carey Heatherly, Carmichael Library, recently presented to the Bessemer High School class of 1953. The class toured Montevallo Jan. 30. The presentation focused on early campus history covering the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School, Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute and Alabama College eras. The group gathered at Parnell Memorial Library for the presentation.
