Falcons to compete for GSC championship today

A ninth-inning rally came up short as the University of Montevallo dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 7 Southern Arkansas University at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn., Tuesday.
Despite the loss, UM advances to the championship game of the tournament by virtue of remaining undefeated through their first three games. The Falcons received a “bye” toward the championship game and will meet the winner between SAU (44-9) and No. 2 Delta State University (43-9). SAU and DSU are scheduled to play an elimination game Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will face UM (36-24) for the Gulf South Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon at 4:30.
The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio, with Arky Shea Bartlett describing the play-by-play action. You will need to have the QuickTime Player in order to listen to the broadcast. The game is also scheduled to be broadcast via video broadband by Penn Atlantic Sports. There is a fee of $ 5.50 to view the video broadband broadcast. The audio broadcast on UM Internet Radio is free.

Packwood receives distinguished teacher award

Gary Packwood received the 2008 College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher Award at the faculty/staff meeting held April 23.
The award is presented annually to one fine arts faculty member, based on student nominations.
Packwood is currently the interim director of choral activities and holds the positions of associate director of choral activities and assistant professor of music at the University of Montevallo, where he conducts the University Chorus and Chamber Singers, serves as the coordinator of music education and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and music education. In addition, he is founder and conductor of The Montevallo Chorale, an amateur community choir based in Montevallo.
Prior to coming to Montevallo in 2003, he taught elementary and high school general and choral music in south Florida for 10 years. Choirs under his direction have performed, by invitation, for the Music Educator’s National Conference, the Florida Music Educators Association Clinic/Conference, three national television performances and have toured throughout the Southeast. Packwood has been a guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician and motivational speaker throughout the U.S. and is quickly becoming one of South America’s favorite conductors. Packwood has served as guest conductor and lecturer and has lead master classes for the Festival Internacional de Musica da UFPI in Brazil; the first American choral conductor to be invited. In 2007 he traveled to the Universidade Federal de Uberlandia, Brazil, where he lectured, led master classes and conduced the university’s choral and opera ensembles. In 2008 he is scheduled to appear with the State Conservatory of Music, Uberlandia, the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo, as conductor for the 2008 Louisiana SATB Senior High School All-State Choir and the Brevard County (Fla.) 2008 Middle School Honor Choir.
He has published an article in the MENC journal and has presented sessions at numerous state and divisional conventions of both MENC and ACDA.
Packwood is a lifetime member of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Educators National Conference, the Alabama Music Educators Association, the Alabama Vocal Association and the College Music Society. He holds memberships in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda. He received the master of arts degree from Florida Atlantic University and the doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting and literature from Louisiana State University.
Spring commencement exercises held Saturday
Morgan Bell, a College of Fine Arts graduate, receives her diploma from University of Montevallo president Philip C. Williams. This was the first spring commencement in the University’s history to be held in the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center. It was moved from its planned Flowerhill location because of inclement weather.
The University of Montevallo held its spring commencement ceremony Saturday, May 3, in the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center. The event was moved from its planned Flowerhill lawn location because of inclement weather.
Presiding over the ceremony was President Philip C. Williams. Scott Peterson served as academic grand marshall.
Music was provided by the University of Montevallo Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Joe Ardovino, associate professor of music.
Cedric Norman, student trustee, gave the invocation. Remarks were given by Daniel McBrayer, outgoing SGA president, and Mary Beth Fleming, outgoing senior class president, led the senior class pledge.

Graduating this spring were 267 students, including 94 from the College of Arts and Sciences, 23 from the Stephens College of Business, 104 from the College of Education and 46 from the College of Fine Arts.
Graduates were inducted into the University of Montevallo National Alumni Association by Karen Kelly ’80, association president.
The commencement speaker was Joseph B. Morton, State Superintendent of Education.
Continuing education announces class offerings

Morning Weight Training Class
Not your average weight-training program. This class is tailored for you as it individually assesses and assigns a personal weight-training program to meet your needs: weight management, rehabilitation, general mobility and body re-shaping. All fitness levels included. Open to both men and women.

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays

** The cost will be $100 for each class if over age 65 or if taking both classes.
University of Montevallo policy states that all users of the Student Activity Center facilities (weight room and pool) must be 18 years of age or older.
