Committee announces call for proposals

The Concert and Lecture Series Committee has recently announced its call for proposals for the 2009-2010 academic year. Anyone may submit a proposal for the committee to fund a performance or lecture on campus. The budget period runs from October 2009 through September 2010, and this is the time frame for all proposed events.

Those interested in submitting a proposal are asked to bear in mind that the already small budget has been made smaller by at least 25 percent this year and that the committee typically fields far more requests than can be honored. In the past, the committee has tried to fund larger, more well-attended events over smaller ones and has tried to insure a diversity of events both in type and in department/area of origin. Furthermore, the committee strongly encourages all those who submit proposals to have multiple funding sources and departmental support.

A proposal form was recently sent campus-wide via e-mail for use in submitting proposals. While the committee does accept paper applications, electronic submission of applications and supporting documentation are encouraged and appreciated.

For more information, contact Michael F. Patton Jr. at Ext. 6434 or via e-mail at PattonM@montevallo.edu.

UM group lights the way for suicide prevention

On Sunday, Nov. 8, a team of people from across the University of Montevallo will participate in the 2009 Out of the Darkness Walk at Heardmont Park.

This 5K (3.2 mile) walk is meant to draw attention to the growing problem of suicide in our society and how it can be prevented. The team already has 33 members registered for the walk and has raised close to $1,000 to help fund research and support for family members affected by suicide. Registration at the event starts at 2 p.m., and the walk starts at 3 p.m.

To sign up and participate, visit www.outofthedarkness.org/ and type in the team name, “Illuminating Montevallo,” in the Participant/Team Search box, or contact team captain Megan Reichert at mreicher@forum.montevallo.edu. Fund-raising is encouraged, but not required, so don’t let that hold you back. We’d be happy to have you on the team.

Heardmont Park is located on Highway 119 in Hoover.
