Mary L. Bartlett will give a lecture on how mental-health workers can assess and work effectively with suicidal people. While the lecture will have a clinical orientation, it will cover basic warning signs, symptoms, myths and other information that may be useful to faculty and staff in all areas across campus. All are invited. The lecture will take place Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Wills Hall, room 200, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Handouts will be provided.

The Montevallo Branch of AAUW will hold a public forum Thursday, Oct. 29, at 5:30 p.m., in Hill House, on the University of Montevallo campus. The topic will be “Reshaping Public Policy on Health Care and Poverty.” AAUW State Officer and UM graduate Anna Blair of Alabama Arise will talk about these public policy issues and comment on the personal journey that led to her work with Alabama Arise.

The 8th Annual Day of the Dead presentation will take place Friday, Oct. 30, at 9 a.m., in Carmichael Library. Eric Vaccarella and his students will present their altars and educate attendees about this uniquely Latin American holiday. A class from one of the Alabaster schools is expected to visit the library for this event. This year’s altars (or, ofrendas) are dedicated to Elvis Presley, Patrick Swayze, Marilyn Monroe and Paul William “Bear” Bryant. In addition, an altar has been constructed to commemorate the victims of cancer. The altars will be on display in Carmichael Library through Friday, Nov. 6.

The Office of Service Learning is collecting new or gently used XL twin size blankets for Safehouse of Shelby County. Safehouse is a full-service domestic violence and sexual assault center that provides emergency shelter to victims. Donation boxes will be located in the Stephens College of Business, Davis Hall, on the first floor of Bloch, in the main hallway in Wills Hall, on the second floor of Comer Hall and in the foyer of Harman Hall. The fall career fair will take place Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 1-4 p.m., at the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center. Participants should dress professionally and bring copies of their resumés. For more information, contact the Counseling and Career Center at Ext. 6262.
