History Makers Program

Rep. Patricia Todd, a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 54 in downtown Birmingham, will be the keynote speaker. She took office in November 2006 and is the associate director of AIDS Alabama. She is the first openly gay elected official in the state of Alabama. The program is sponsored by Multicultural Affairs, in association with SAFE.
12th Annual Life Raft Debate

Six contestants will compete for the coveted oar in the 12th Annual Life Raft Debate. This year’s slate of combatants includes John Bawden, history; William Clow, theatre/dean of fine arts; Cedric Norman (UM alumnus and former SGA president), marketing/communication studies; Gary Packwood, music; defending champion Scott Turner, political science; and Benton Tyler, mathematics. For those who cannot attend the event on campus, this year’s Life Raft Debate will be presented online, live, by UM’s Division of Mass Communication and will be available at www.montevallo.edu/lifecast/. Streaming will begin at 6:45 p.m., featuring interviews with those present about their predictions on the outcome of the event. In addition, new this year, UM student Rachel Crisson will be providing live tweets from http://twitter.com/UMLifeRaft.

“Laughing at the Differences,” a stand-up comedy movie will be presented. In his show, Josh Sundquist uses humorous stories about his experiences as an amputee to share ten lessons about diversity and to promote understanding between individuals of differing backgrounds. The program is sponsored by Multicultural Affairs, in association with Disability Support Services.
