The University of Montevallo’s strategic plan will be presented to the Board of Trustees for consideration and adoption Friday, Nov. 7. Faculty and staff are encouraged to browse the UM website to become familiar with the planning process, the Strategic Planning Committee members and the most current draft of our proposed plan at www.montevallo.edu/irpa/PlanningAndAssessment/Strategic_Plan.shtm.

The 11th annual Lift Raft Debate is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., in Palmer Auditorium, and the call has recently gone out for nominations for participants. Nominate someone else, or volunteer to be on the panel yourself. And remember, this year President Williams will have an unprecedented opportunity to take a second bite at the apple in his attempt to become the first repeat champion in the history of UM’s Life Raft Debate. Chi Sigma Iota, Chi Chapter (counseling honor society), is conducting a hurricane relief food drive. Proceeds will go to re-stock the shelves at Oak Mountain Missions Ministries. Non-perishables may be dropped off in the bin outside the Counseling, Leadership and Foundations office, located on the first floor of Wills Hall.

Notice: The graduate program in communication science and disorders at the University of Montevallo is undergoing accreditation. The ASHA/CAA site visit will occur Thursday, Sept. 25-Friday, Sept. 26. Send public comments about the program in advance of the site visit to Policy and Procedures on PUBLIC COMMENT at www.asha.org/NR/rdonlyres/75A92D0F-FB41-44E0-A0C3-6F1C1CEB35CB/0/PublicComment05.pdf. A public meeting is set for Thursday, Sept. 25, from 3-4 p.m., in room 100 of the Speech and Hearing Clinic on the University of Montevallo campus.

Because of the procedures necessary to close the University’s fiscal year, the Business Office and Cashier’s Office will be closed Monday, Sept. 29, and Tuesday, Sept. 30. All paperwork received during these two days will be entered in October. Budget directors will have access to view budget information during this time. Please contact the Business Office at Ext. 6060 if you have questions. Thank you for your cooperation during this important process.

The inaugural call for nominations for UM’s first Distinguished Diversity Advocate Award has recently been issued. Nominations are sought of individuals who have demonstrated their leadership and commitment to the advancement of groups under-represented or under-served at the University of Montevallo through one or more of the following actions: initiatives enhancing access and equity, outstanding teaching, research or creative work, improved campus climate, community outreach, leadership development, gender rights, religious tolerance and career development for those groups. Nominations must include the nomination cover form (available from the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs), which provides contact information for both the nominee and the person making the nomination. In addition, submissions must include a letter of endorsement (short narrative statement), not to exceed two pages, that clearly describes how the nominee addresses the previously described criteria. The nominee can come from the ranks of faculty, staff, students and the community. Completed cover forms and letters of endorsement should be sent to Robert L. Robinson, selection committee chair, by Wednesday, Oct. 1, at robinsonrl@montevallo.edu, or via handmail to station 6023.

Any full-time faculty member planning to submit a proposal for a research and special projects grant for the 2008-2009 academic year may request a copy of the guidelines and the application form from Karen Neal at Ext. 6501. The proposal deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 1. Completed applications should be submitted to Elaine Hughes, station 6501, by that date. If planning research involving human or animal subjects, contact John Burling, chair of the human and animal subjects research committee/institutional animal care and use committee, for procedures and forms that must be completed prior to submission of a research and special projects proposal. The annual Alabama Connection Graduate and Professional School Fair will take place Tuesday, Oct 7, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Pete Hanna Center on the Samford University campus. The event is sponsored by the UM Counseling and Career Center and all BACHE career development centers. Need a ride? Contact UM’s Counseling Career Center at Ext. 6262. During the summer, the old student e-mail system (UMail) was replaced with ForUM e-mail. UMail is still accessible, and will be until Thursday, Oct. 30. However, on Oct. 30, at noon, the UMail system will be decommissioned. Please note that faculty and staff Outlook and Entourage e-mail accounts are unaffected by the termination of UMail.
