Michelle Duran, Art, has been invited by the Royal Institute for the Study and Conservation of Belgium’s Artistic Heritage (KIK-IRPA) and Illuminare (Centre for the Study of Illuminated Manuscripts at the Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven) to write an essay on the Anjou Bible, commissioned for Giovanna I of Naples by her grandfather Robert the Wise, and one of the principal objects of Duran’s research. The manuscript, which dates to the 14th century, is currently undergoing conservation at KIK-IRPA. Duran’s essay will appear in the volume dedicated to the manuscript as part of Illuminare’s Corpus of Illuminated Manuscripts series, to be published by Peeters Publishers in fall 2010, and will coincide with the exhibition of the newly restored bible at the City Museum of Leuven. The exhibition is scheduled to open Sept. 17, 2010. Duran’s essay will focus on the two elaborately decorated frontispieces that open the bible and the role that art played in the construction of political authority and identity in the Angevin Kingdom of Naples. Duran has spent the last year collaborating with Lieve Watteeuw, the chief conservator-restorer of the bible at KIK-IRPA, regarding issues of patronage, provenance and usage in both this and other Angevin manuscripts. Duran’s invitation to participate in this project recognizes her work as one of the leading scholars on Giovanna I and the Angevin patronage of art during the 14th century.
