Nearly 50 people from across the UM campus turned out to walk with the university team “Illuminating Montevallo” on Sunday, Nov. 8, to raise funding and awareness about suicide and its prevention across Alabama. The team raised almost $1,700 for the state chapter to support families who have lost a loved one to suicide, and the Birmingham walk reached its goal to raise $80,000 with sponsorships included. Assistant professor Mary Bartlett reports that it was a wonderful day with perfect weather and lots of team spirit. UM definitely was a presence at this event, and warm thanks are extended to all faculty, staff and students who participated. The goal is for the team—and the awareness of suicide prevention—to continue to grow each year.
