This year’s sustainability banquet class will serve lunches Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday Nov. 19. The lunches will consist of a selection of soups, a salad and bread. They will be served as carry-out lunches from the lobby of Main Hall from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. The purpose is to highlight the availability of a delicious, affordable lunch option that is also easy and convenient. The cost will be $5 per person.

The UM Bookstore’s annual faculty and staff event celebrating partnership will take place Thursday, Nov. 19, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., at the University of Montevallo bookstore, located in Farmer Hall. During the event, faculty and staff will receive a 30 percent discount on select merchandise. For more information, contact Jessica Glass at Ext. 6575.

Thanksgiving dinner in the cafe will take place Thursday, Nov. 19, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Included with the meal will be a variety of desserts.

The grand opening of the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory will take place Saturday, Nov. 21. The 11th annual Loretta Brown Symposium was held on campus Oct. 23. The conference is a continuing education event for speech-language pathologists, hosted by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. This year’s speaker was Dr. Martha Burns, from Northwestern University, who presented a program titled “Neuroscience in the 21st Century.” More than 100 professionals attended the conference, providing both a valuable service to the community and generating revenue for the foundation.

A massage therapist will be available to students, faculty and staff on Mondays, from 1-4 p.m., by appointment only, at UM Health Services, which is located in the East wing of Main Hall. The cost will be $15 for a 15-minute massage and $30 for a 30-minute massage. To make an appointment, call Ext. 6275.

The social work program is now accepting applications for admission to its professional program for Spring semester 2010. Students applying for admission to the program must meet the academic and nonacademic criteria outlined in the application, available online at www.montevallo.edu/bss/socialwork.shtm. Paper copies can be obtained from the social work program office in Jeter 100. Admission to the program usually occurs when the student is taking SWK 350, Introduction to Social Work Practice, and after all prerequisite courses have been completed with the required GPA. Applications are due to the social work program director by 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30. Students interested in learning more about the social work program should contact Laurel Hitchcock at lhitchcock@montevallo.edu or at Ext. 6176.

Multicultural Affairs, in association with the Campus Ministry Association, will sponsor an interfaith and multicultural holiday celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m., in the Montevallo Room, Anna Irvin Dining Hall.

The AAUW Adelante book group will meet Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m., in the Sarah Palmer Commons (Comer 202). The topic will be “Empowering Women Around the World.” Books include Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortensen and David Relin, and Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn. Presenters include Ann Scott and Dee Woodham, respectively.

Kappa Omicron Nu (family and consumer sciences honor society) and Chi Sigma Iota (counseling honor society) are teaming up to collect new or gently used men’s, women’s and children’s coats for this winter season. Coats collected will be donated to the Jimmie Hale Mission and Jessie’s Place. Collection boxes are located in both Bloch Hall and Wills Hall. The coat drive will take place through Wednesday, Dec. 9.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is seeking nominations for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. The award is intended to recognize individuals who exhibit exceptional humanitarian and spiritual qualities. Students who graduate in December, as well as those graduating in May 2010, are eligible for consideration. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Jan, 22, 2010, at 4 p.m. Nomination forms will be sent to all faculty and staff via the campus e-mail system, or they can be obtained from Student Affairs. Nominations should be turned in to that office, which is located in Central Main Hall, lower level, station 6020. Need more information?
