Alabama's Public Liberal Arts University

Department of Music

Welcome to the Department of Music web pages. We appreciate the visit and hope that you find the information you need about our various programs of study and activities to be found in our department.

I am pleased to tell you that we are becoming an all-Steinway school. This means that all of our students practice and perform on the very best pianos to be found in America. This distinction was made possible by the very generous gift from a local corporation.

We have the distinction of being the first department in Alabama to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (1931).   We offer strong professional programs in a liberal arts setting and UM graduates have made successful careers in performing, teaching and creating music from Broadway to the international concert stage and beyond.

Prospective students please visit the pages describing programs of study as well as the scholarship audition process, requirements and dates. Here you will find the specifics of entering the program and information concerning departmental financial aid. We encourage you to make a visit to the campus at your earliest convenience. Plan to sit in on classes and rehearsals, have a short lesson with a studio teacher and take a campus tour. All this can be arranged by giving us a call at 205-665-6670.

Also, please take a look at our Calendar of Events and feel free to join us for one of our many concerts and recitals. We look forward to hearing from you and meeting you when you are on campus.
