Community School
The UM Community School of Music offers non-credit individual lessons in piano, voice, guitar, and most band instruments. Lessons are offered for students of all ages, pre-school through adult. The cost of the lessons is determined by the level of teacher selected (Associate, Professional, or Artist) and the length of the lesson requested (30-, 45-, or 60-minute lessons are available). For more information, contact Ms. Laurie Middaugh, Director, at 205-665-6678, or middaughl@montevallo.edu.
History and Mission
The University of Montevallo Community School of Music was established in 1972 as the "Preparatory Division" of the Department of Music. The Preparatory division was founded "...to provide top quality instruction for pre-college age students at a reasonable price..." (Original proposal for the Establishment of the Preparatory Division). With the beginning of the 1997 academic year the name was changed to the University of Montevallo Community School of Music to better reflect the changing and growing mission of this division... to offer high quality music instruction and other musical activities for all members of the University of Montevallo community including pre-college students, adults, senior citizens, and college students who are serious about the pursuit of the study of music on a non-credit basis.
Faculty
Community School of Music Faculty are designated by the following categories:
Artist Faculty: members of the University of Montevallo Department of Music faculty, many of whom are doctorally qualified, and all of whom are experienced teachers, scholars, and performers.
Professional Faculty: Community School faculty who hold degrees, usually the Master's, or who are experienced as performers or teachers.
Associate Faculty: UM students who have demonstrated outstanding ability as student musicians and performers.
General Information and Policies
Enrollment: A completed registration form accompanied by the semester's tuition must be received to be accepted into the Community School of Music.
Students who wish to study in the Community School of Music may do so by contracting for a semester of study and agreeing to pay for a complete semester of study. Students who enroll after the beginning of the semester can contract on a pro rata basis.
Payment of Tuition: Tuition should be paid in advance. The Community School requests that payment be made by personal check or money order. The Community School does not accept cash payment.
Students who have enrolled with the Community School may pay in one, two or four installments, with payments due according to the schedule below.
Discontinuation of Study: Students who choose to discontinue study before the semester's end are responsible for paying any unpaid balance of the semester's tuition per the contract for study.
The Community School of Music reserves the right to discontinue a student at any time for poor attendance, nonpayment of fees, lack of practice, or disruptive behavior. In this instance any balance of the semester's tuition will be refunded on a pro rata basis.
Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is crucial for success in music study. Refunds are not given for missed lessons and makeup lessons are given only at the teacher's discretion. In the event that it becomes necessary for the instructor to miss a lesson, a makeup lesson will be scheduled. If the student misses the makeup lesson, it will be offered again only at the teacher's discretion.
Students who are late for a lesson cannot be guaranteed their full lesson time since it is essential for the instructor to run his/her studio on schedule.
Practice: Daily practice and review are crucial to the success of the music student. The amount of practice varies with age, level, and instrument, but the need for a regular routine is common to all. The Community School of Music assumes no responsibility for lack progress when a student is negligent in practice.
Recitals: The Community School of Music holds up to six recitals per year in LeBaron Recital Hall. All recitals are held on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM. No student is expected to perform in all recitals. The decision to perform is always made by the instructor, student, and parent(s) at least two weeks prior to the recital date. Family and friends are always welcome to attend recitals.
