Guide for New Faculty

Library Instruction
Carmichael Library is committed to the goal of increasing the information literacy of the students attending the University.  Information Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, and it extends across the curriculum to touch every discipline.

Library faculty efforts are directed toward teaching the Montevallo community how to approach the wide array of resources available to them; teaching both information concepts and use of specific resources.

Help from Librarians

Librarians assist faculty to broaden their curriculum resources beyond the standard textbook. Librarians can provide research assistance to faculty as they develop their courses and create their reading and reserve lists.

  • Librarians are available to meet with faculty to discuss their courses and library involvement.

  • Librarians are available to read copies of course syllabi and offer ideas.

  • Librarians identify Internet resources for faculty and create World Wide Web (WWW) pages with links to important Web sites

For example, librarians have created Research Guides on the web for discipline based research

  • Librarians can also provide faculty with student handouts on the web for specific classes, handouts on copyright, subject bibliographies, citation style, and the research process.

Faculty ordering process for library material
Each department Chair designates a faculty member to act as a liaison with the library to coordinate departmental allocations.  Contact your department Chair for specific information.

Faculty are encouraged to request library materials needed to support the university curriculum. Mrs. Pauline Williams, Professor and Collection Development Librarian works with faculty to identify appropriate material, inform faculty and departments of their allocations, and reviews along with the Director and the Serials Committee decisions regarding periodicals.
