How Do I...

Information Literacy at UM

The University of Montevallo's Mission Statement focuses on the development of a responsible and informed citizenry through the traditional liberal arts and professional programs.

We live in a society where the amount of information available and the ways in which it can be accessed are increasing exponentially.  This abundance of information, however, does not guarantee an informed society unless our students acquire the abilities they need to use information efficiently and effectively.

Carmichael Library is committed to the goal of increasing the information literacy of the students attending the University.  Information Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, and it extends across the curriculum to touch every discipline.  An information literate person is able to:

  • Determine that information is needed and to what extent
  • Access the needed information efficiently and effectively
  • Evaluate information and information sources critically
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues involved in accessing and using information and follow existing laws, regulations, and guidelines when using information.

Our information literacy program seeks to teach these skills.  Our program supports the standards and goals established by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)
