How do I connect my laptop to the wireless network?

 

Wireless access points are installed in the Carmichael Library. In order to access it with your laptop follow these steps:

• When UMNET pops up on the task bar of your computer join the network.
• Configure your computer for the University of Montevallo's network. 
  For more information see Computer Services for the following information:
            Information for Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers
            Information for Windows 95, 98 or ME computers
            Information for Macintosh computers
• At this point, the only web site you will be able to access is the University's Network Registration site (NETREG).  
• Register your computer with the University network through NETREG:. 

               Run Internet Explorer.  The UM Network Registration site will    
               automatically load.  If it doesn't, call the Help Desk at (205) 665-6520.

               Read Code for Computer Resource Use.

               Login to the registration page using your UMail username and    
               password.

               Complete the registration form, following the onscreen instructions.

               Turn off your computer and unplug your patch cable from the wall jack.

               Wait five (5) minutes.

               Reconnect your patch cable to the wall jack and turn on your computer.

• You should now be able to access the Internet.

Common questions about NETREG:

1. The NETREG page doesn't automatically display. What do I do?
   Manually enter http://netreg.montevallo.edu into your browser's navigation pane.  If that doesn't work, contact the Computer Services Help Desk at (205) 665-6520
2. I don't know my UMail username and password.  How do I get this info?
   Come to the Computer Services Help Desk in Morgan Hall room 109.  Be sure to bring your student ID.  Please note that the Help Desk cannot give out account information over the phone.
3. If I change rooms, will I have to register my computer again?
   Probably.  If you move to a new room in the same building, you might have to re-register.  If you move to a new building, you will definitely need to re-register.
