How Do I...

How do I find a call number in the stacks?

To locate an item on the shelves in the library, look up the call number for that item in the Library Catalog
When looking up the call number, be sure to do the following

  • Write down the Location, Collection, and Call No.

  • Look at the box marked Status to determine if the item is 'checked in', 'checked out' or 'missing'.

All items in the library are arranged by the call number within each collection.  The call numbers are alphabetic and numeric.

To find an item with this call number do the following:

                                            PS 3561
                                            .I496 P54
                                            1993

  • Follow the signs on the ends of the shelves to guide you to the correct location - PS

  • Within the PS section, locate the number - PS 3561

  • Locate the letters and numbers after the decimal point - .I496 P54 1993

All items are arranged on the shelves according to the Library of Congress Classification System, or LC.  This system  organizes knowledge by subject, which keeps items on the same topic together. You can go directly to the correct subject area on the shelves and browse the shelves for items you are interested in.  The general subject break down for the Library of Congress is as follows:
