Reference Services

    Reference service is available at the following times

            Monday – Thursday             9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

            Friday                                 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

            Saturday                             No Service

            Sunday                               2 p.m. – 9 p.m.

 

Computer Lab

 

Computer Services operates a computer lab on the lower level of the library.  The lab is generally open on the same schedule as the library.  Changes in the lab’s hours are posted in advance.  Use of the lab is limited to University students, faculty, and staff, and a valid UM ID must be presented upon entering the lab.

 

Copying and Printing

 

Printing in the Reference Commons and the computer lab is controlled through a print management system.  Cards can be purchased on the main level of the library and can be used in both locations.  

The library provides photocopiers and microform reader/printers for use by library patrons.  These machines are coin-operated, and some are also equipped to accept the cards used with the print management system.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Students, faculty, staff, and faculty emeriti may use interlibrary loan service

  • Undergraduate students are limited to 5 requests at one time

  • The library is unable to process requests for:

            1.  Materials on reserve

            2.  Materials owned by Carmichael Library

            3.  Textbooks available at the University bookstore

            4.  Any requests that would lead to a violation of US copyright law

  •  In general, the library will absorb all charges associated with interlibrary loans.  In special circumstances, where the charges are higher than usual, we may ask the patron or department to pay some part of the charge

  •  Carmichael Library does not lend rare materials, archival materials, reference materials, and items in high demand to other librarie

Smoking, Food and Drink

Smoking is not allowed anywhere in Carmichael Library

All drinks must be in a covered container.

Patrons may have snacks in the library, but full meals and meal delivery are not allowed.

Phones

There is a pay phone in the stairwell on the mail level.  The library does not provide a courtesy phone for patron use.  Cell phones must be turned off inside the library.

 

Paging

 

Patrons are paged by staff members only in the case of emergencies.

 

Security System

 

The library is protected by a security system. If patrons try to enter or leave through one of the secured doors, the alarm at the circulation desk will sound.  When the alarm sounds, the patron should return to the circulation desk and present any materials for inspection.  All patrons must enter and exit the library through the front doors on the main level of the library.

 

EBSCO Electronic Classroom

 

The EBSCO classroom may be reserved by calling the library’s secretary.  Faculty and other university personnel may use the classroom for instruction and training if it is not being used for library instruction.  No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom.  The classroom is generally not available for use on weekends

Conference Room

The library’s conference room may be reserved for University business by calling the library’s secretary.  Food and beverages are allowed in the conference room.

Checks

We will accept checks as payment for fines and lost book charges for the exact amount owed.    We do not cash checks for library patrons, and print management cards can not be purchased by check.

Recalls

The library will recall circulating items if the item is needed for reserve.  The patron holding the recalled item will have one week to return the item before fines begin to accrue.  Fines will accrue at the rate of $.20 per day on recalled items.
