Regional In-Service Education Center Current Workshops

Below you will find descriptions of current workshops available for registration.

 

Registration for all workshops sponsored by the In-Service Center must be done through STI-PD (unless otherwise noted below in the session announcement).

Follow the steps below to register for a session.

 1.       Once you log into STI-PD (https://pdweb.alsde.edu), click the PD Title tab.
 2.
       Enter UMINS12 in the PD Title Number box and click SEARCH.
 3.
       Scroll down until you see the title of the session for which you wish to register.
 4.
       Click the LIST link on the right.
 5.
       Scroll down again and click on the ENROLL button.

If you have access to STI-PD but are having trouble logging on:  You must contact the PD Coordinator for your school system.  For more detailed instructions for STI-PD, please CLICK HERE.

A confirmation will be forwarded from STI-PD only if your profile is updated with your current email address.  You will be contacted by the In-Service Center only if a workshop for which you have registered is cancelled or rescheduled.

If, for any reason, you do not have access to STI-PD:
Please call the In-Service Center at (205) 358-8543 for information on how to enroll for a session.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Signature Program

Description:

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Signature Program helps to create a common core language within an organization.  It is built on proven principle-based leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey's best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  During the training, participants will learn how to develop the following habits:

Information:
Participation is free to educators in the UM In-Service Region.  Educators outside of the UM In-Service Region will be required to purchase the participant guide at the current price.  Non-Educators must register through the Continuing Education Department and pay the applicable fee which includes the participant guide.

SAMUELS Meeting Series

Description: The SAMUEL meeting series is being held at each Regional In-Service Center. The meetings are focused on providing professional development in the area of differentiating instruction for English Learners (ELs).
Dates/Topics:
 
October 12, 2011 - Session I: Interpreting ACCESS Reports & Student Goal Setting
Participants will provide an overview of how to interpret ACCESS for ELLs scores for instructional purposes; review the importance of student goal setting and learn how to write instructional goals for EL students; and learn to write language objectives and find practical ways of incorporating language objectives into lesson plans.

December 13, 2011 - Session II: Data Sequence Cycle for Continuous Improvement: Drilling Down into Data
Participants will learn to drill down ACCESS data and plan for continuous improvement using the Data Analysis Cycle.

February 7, 2012 - Session III: Using the Coaching Model to Implement Sheltered Instruction

April 25, 2012 - Session IV: WIDA Formative Assessment: How to Assess ELs in the Classroom and Determine Benchmarks

Teaching Diverse Students - National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) Regional Intensive Initiative

Description:  Participants will work with officials from Teaching Tolerance, faculty from the University of Montevallo, and members of the National Association for Multicultural Education to explore key dispositions and strategies for teaching diverse students. Specifically, students will work with facilitators to engage the following Teaching Tolerance curriculum materials:

  1. Understanding the Influence of Race;
  2. Primer on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy;
  3. The Common Beliefs Survey; and
  4. Mix-It-Up at Lunch.

Each of these materials provide participants with an opportunity to critically examine their own perceptions of teaching students from diverse backgrounds as well as habits for enacting culturally responsive pedagogies in their classrooms. Maureen Costello, Executive Director for Teaching Tolerance, will provide a keynote address.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Teaching Tolerance, a division of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

$25 for NAME members; $40 for non-NAME members (includes breakfast and lunch)

2011 Alabama Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference

Description: Join English teachers from across the state of Alabama for the 2011 AL Council of Teachers of English (ACTE) annual conference. This year's theme is MOTIVATION MATTERS. The keynote and general session speaker will be ALFIE KOHN, a nationally known author and presenter on topics including education, human behavior, and parenting. He has been featured on the TODAY Show, Oprah, and in many national publications. Time magazine calls Kohn "perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of education's fixation on grades [and] test scores." Alfie Kohn will be speaking on the important topic of STUDENT MOTIVATION.

Participants will also have the opportunity to choose various breakout sessions offering practical, innovative strategies to reach today's learners.
