Competition for Writers


Entries should be turned in to Glenda Conway, English Department.

     The Harbert Writing Center Poetry and Prose Competition is held biannually, every fall and spring semester. University of Montevallo students are encouraged to submit poems or short stories for consideration. First, second, and third place winners in each division will have the opportunity to present their works at a Poetry and Prose Reading.  In addition, excerpts from the winners' works will be printed on postcards and/or bookmarks, and first place winners will be recognized at Honors Day.

Official Rules:

1) Entrants must be UM students.

2) Entries are accepted in two divisions: poetry and short story/nonfiction prose.  Each entrant may submit up to five poems and up to two prose pieces, fiction or nonfiction, of 4,000 words or less.

3) Short story/ prose pieces must be typed and double-spaced. Poetry pieces must be typed.

4) All entries must be original works composed by those entering the competition.

Each entry must be accompanied by a cover page with the following information: name, address, telephone number, email address, and the title of the entry.

6) No identifying information other than the title should appear on the work itself.
