Guide To Student Computing
Welcome to Student Computing at the University of Montevallo! All students are provided computer access while enrolled at the University. This access includes a Network Login ID and password. This ID allows you to use electronic mail, the Internet, and a variety of application software in the computer labs. There are nearly 200 computers in the various labs on campus for you to use.

Computer Services Help Desk
Where?  Room 109 in Morgan Hall

When?  8 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday

Phone?  6520

Who?  Computer Services will support only University owned hardware and software.

Network Login ID
New students can pick up their Login ID and passwords at the Computer Services Help Desk.

If you are a returning student, you should use the same Login ID and password you used the last time you were on the University computer network. If you are having trouble signing on, your account may need to be reactivated. Go to the Help Desk to reactivate your account.

Each student must sign a form consenting to the Code of Computer Resource Use prior to receiving their Login ID, password, and E-mail address.

Your Login Password
Passwords protect your files and identify you to the network. Your password should NEVER be given out for others to use. Try not to use phrases, names or numbers that can be associated with you. Never write your password down where others might find it. It is your responsibility to remember your password and keep it confidential.

The very first time you Login you will be forced to change your password. From then on passwords should be changed as often as needed to protect your user account. A new password will have to be typed in twice to verify it before it will be changed. Each password must be at least 5 characters long and can contain uppercase, lowercase, and numbers. Passwords are CASE SENSITIVE and must be typed the same each time they are entered.

Internet Access
By definition, the Internet is an open access environment. Students at the U of M are provided Internet access via the computer labs and through connections in the individual residence hall rooms.

Because the Internet is a public forum, care should be taken when using it. Internet browsers are available on every lab computer. Public domain browsers are available through Computer Services for students with their own computers.

In-Room Access
Individual residence hall rooms are equipped with one network connection, providing access to the Internet and E-mail. The connection is provided through a wall plate, which also provides cable TV access.

To connect to the network from your room, your computer must have a network card (10BaseT Ethernet) installed and a connection cable. Both can be purchased from the UM Bookstore or a computer supply store. Installation of the card and connection of the cable are the resident’s responsibilities. Some computer stores in the area can do fee based installation and service.

Computer Services and the Bookstore will not install or support these products. Computer Services will only be responsible for checking bad connections in the wall plate and verifying that a network signal is reaching that point of access.

Computer Lab Help
If you have trouble with a computer between 8 am and 5 pm Monday thru Friday, call the Computer Services Help Desk at 6520.

Between 6 pm and 9 pm Monday thru Thursday night, you can call the Resident Technical Assistant (RTA) on call. The phone numbers will be posted in the labs.

Because the hall labs are not staffed with lab assistants, 24-hour help is not available.

Restrictions
Users are strictly prohibited from changing the configuration system on the computers or otherwise tampering with the set up on the system. You are also not allowed to load, or download from the Internet, any software, screen savers, or games on these computers. Doing this can change the setup on the system and can lock up the computer. User’s are not allowed to change the printer que.
