Prospective Student Questions

What are the deadlines for admission?

  • Graduate program priority deadlines, unless otherwise noted below:
         Fall:         July 15
         Spring:     November 15
         Summer:  April  15

  • Counseling (M.Ed.) priority deadlines:
         Fall cohort group:         July 15
         Spring cohort group:     November 15

  • Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) deadline:
         Fall:  March 1

What is a "priority" deadline?

  • Applicants may submit materials after the deadline with the understanding that submitting materials after the priority deadline does not guarantee consideration for admission for the following term. (Note that the Speech-Language Pathology program has a hard deadline of March 1 each year).

Does your office offer campus visits for prospective graduate students?

  • Yes. Prospective students who are interested in all programs (except for the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology) are welcome to contact the Coordinator for Graduate Recruitment via the link below and set up a visit to UM. Note that the graduate student visits are usually one-on-one or small group and are targeted to the intended department and relevant buildings on campus (i.e. Carmichael Library, Student Activity Center, etc.).

What are the required test scores for admission (for programs asking for "satisfactory" test scores)?*

  • GRE 850 (old format) or 290 (new format)

  • GMAT 400

  • MAT 388

*please note that the MBA and Speech-Language Pathology programs are excluded from the above category.

How can I find out the testing dates and registration information for the MAT, GMAT, and GRE?

How much graduate coursework can I transfer to UM?

  • A maximum of six (6) semester hours (10 quarter hours) of graduate work, approved by UM, may be transferred from a regionally accredited institution. Such credit must have been earned within six years prior to the granting of the degree. No course may be transferred with a grade lower than B, and no course may be transferred with a grade of pass/fail. Course equivalency is determined by the department chair. Transfer credit practices are consistent with American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).

Do I have to submit my application for graduate study BEFORE submitting test scores and other items that are needed for admission ?

  • We recommend that you submit an application to our office before submitting transcripts and other admission items because this allows us to anticipate the arrival of these items. This is especially true for students who may have alternate or maiden names on their transcripts. Please note that if you indicate us as one of the colleges you wish to send your MAT/GMAT/GRE test score results to prior to applying, they will be applied to your file upon application.

I am completing my undergraduate degree, but want to apply to graduate study at UM. What is the procedure regarding final transcripts?

  • Applicants who fall into this category must submit a final transcript with a degree posted before the end of the first semester of graduate coursework. Students may not take additional coursework without a final transcript on file in Graduate Admissions and Records.

Current Student Questions

What is the graduate course load?

  • Regular term: Full-time=nine (9) or more graduate hours / Part-time=fewer than nine (9) graduate hours

  • Summer term: Full-time=nine (9) or more graduate hours spanning from May to the summer terms / Part-time=five (5) graduate hours or less spanning from May to the summer terms

What is the difference between conditional and unconditional admission?

  • An unconditional admission is granted when all the minimum requirements for admission have been met

  • A conditional admission is granted when the applicant does not have a satisfactory test score or has not compiled with other specific departmental requirements

    • NOTE: There is no conditional admission for the Alternative Master's Degree Program or the Speech-Language Pathology program

    • A conditionally admitted student can take no more than 12 graduate hours and eligibility for financial aid is also affected. Graduate credit at UM will not be awarded until the requirements for unconditional admission have been met.

What is the required GPA for retention and graduation once I have been admitted to a graduate program?

  • With the exception of the Instructional Leadership M.Ed. and Ed.S. programs, a 3.0 GPA is required. The IL M.Ed. and both Ed.S. programs require a 3.25 GPA. A graduate student whose GPA falls below the required 3.0 or 3.25 will be placed on academic warning and will have one term of enrollment in which to raise the GPA.

I will be graduating later this semester or next semester. What is the first thing I need to do?

  • Fill out a diploma card (application for graduation) at the office of Graduate Admissions and Records. If you cannot make it to the office during regular business hours, please contact us at (205) 665-6350 or graduate@montevallo.edu and we will mail one out to you.
