The Departement of Foreign Languages offers four courses.  There is a brief description of each one below.

 

German 101 Introductory German I (GER101)   3 credit Syllabus

This course introduces the fundamentals of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing in German. One introductory and four regular chapters will be covered during this course. You will watch German videos, practice listening comprehension with tapes and CDs, write a diary or journal in German, exchange emails with German students, and surf the Internet for German websites. You will read German magazines and compose small paragraphs. You will participate in various activities and role-plays in order to practice and to reinforce new vocabulary and grammar. You will work in the Computer and Language Lab during several class meetings. Except for a few grammar lessons, this class is taught in German. There is no prerequisite for this course.

German 102 Introductory German II (GER102)   3 credit hours Syllabus

This course continues to teach the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading,   and writing in German. Four chapters of the textbook will be covered during this course. You will watch German videos, practice listening comprehension with tapes and CDs, exchange emails with German students, write a diary or journal in German, compose paragraphs, read magazines and short texts, and surf the Internet for German websites. You will participate in various activities and role-plays in order to practice your speaking ability and to review new vocabulary and grammar. You will work in the Computer and Language Lab during several class meetings.  Except for a few grammar lessons, this class is taught in German. The prerequisite for this course is the successful completion of German 101.

German 201 Intermediate German I (GER201)   3 hours credit Syllabus

This course will develop fluency in the German listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The last four chapters of the textbook will be covered during this course. You will watch German videos, practice listening comprehension with tapes and CDs, exchange emails with German students, write a diary or journal in German, compose essays, read short stories or fairy tales, and surf the Internet for German websites. You will participate in various activities and role-plays in order to practice your speaking ability and to review new vocabulary and grammar. You will work in the Computer and Language Lab during several class meetings. You will help design a German web page for posting our creative work from the course. This course is taught in German. The prerequisite for this class is the successful completion of German 102.

German 202 Intermediate German II (GER202)   3 hours credit Syllabus

This course emphasizes the application of your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. You will read various texts, discuss them in class, and/or write small essays about the reading. You will continue to write a diary or journal in German. You will view different German videos, listen to books or plays on tape, exchange emails with German students, and surf the Internet for information needed for this course. You will create your own short story, fairy tale, or magazine article, or create a German video. You will continue to maintain our German website. You will learn useful things, such as placing a job application and interviewing for a job in German. This course will also give a brief insight on German history. You will work in the Computer and Language Lab during several class meetings. This course is taught in German. The prerequisite for this class is the successful completion of German 201.
