Facilities

Performance Spaces at UM

We use two very different theatre spaces on campus to provide students with a variety of acting, directing and design challenges.

Reynolds Studio Theatre

  • Reynolds Studio Theatre is located in historic Reynolds Hall. The facility was renovated in fall 2004 and we continue to make upgrades. The majority of our main stage shows are produced in this flexible, 160 seat studio theatre space.

Recent productions in Reynolds include the Alabama premieres of HIGH FIDELITY and HEATHERS THE MUSICAL; contemporary plays such as the Pulitzer prize winning CLYBOURNE PARK and SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION; classics such as Shakespeare’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and COMEDY OF ERRORS; Euripides’ The Bacchae; Shaw’s Heartbreak House and Brecht’s THE GOOD PERSON OF SZECHWAN; as well as musicals such as SPRING AWAKENING, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, INTO THE WOODS, CABARET, PIPPIN and RENT.

The Chichester Black Box Theatre

  • The Chichester Black Box Theatre: Commonly referred to as the “Chi Box,” this popular space is used to stage a wide variety of plays and musicals in different configurations.  Chi-Box productions usually sell out quickly and its intimate setting (approximately 50 seats) provides excellent training for students interested in theatre careers in major urban centers such as New York and Chicago.

Past Chi-Box productions include Larry Kramer’s seminal AIDS play THE NORMAL HEART, Jason Robert Brown’s musical SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, and the Alabama premiere of Neil Labute’s FAT PIG.  More recent productions include Annie Baker’s CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION, Yasmina Reza’s THE GOD OF CARNAGE; the Alabama premiere of Adam Bock’s THE THUGS; and the musicals TITLE OF SHOW, ASSASSINS and BIG RIVER.

Additionally, we co-produced Jason Robert Brown’s musical PARADE at the Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham in 2009, and continue to consider additional venues for UM Theatre productions.  Outside the department formally, students also present their original College Night homecoming musicals in the 1200 seat Palmer Auditorium each February.
