All-State Choral Workshop Saturday, October 12, 2013 8:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. This one-day workshop jump-starts your preparation on the AMEA All-State Choir repertoire. Rehearsals are held on the beautiful campus of Montevallo in the Maxine Couch Davis Music Building. The cost is $10.00 per person. Piano Day Saturday, November 23, 2013 9:15 A.M.-3:00 P.M. Piano day is designed for piano students, their teachers and parents, and will include masterclasses for grades 5-8 and grades 9-12, and a recital for grades 5-12. The lineup will also include a mini-recital and discussion on the Piano Sonatas of Beethoven. Admission is free, and students do not have to participate in order to attend. Teachers should complete a registration form (see below) by Friday, November 15, for each student wishing to participate in the recital and/or masterclass. If a student plans to perform in both the masterclass and recital, please choose a different selection for each event. Dr. Lucy DeSa from the Alabama School of Fine Arts will conduct the masterclass for grades 5-8, and Dr. Cynthia MacCrae from the University of Montevallo will conduct the masterclass for grades 9-12. All events will be held in LeBaron Recital Hall in the Davis Music Building. Lunch will be on your own, either on or off campus, and a list of local restaurants will be furnished. We are proud to announce the 2014 University of Montevallo Honor Band Festival, February 28- March 2 2014. The festival will include opportunities to perform standard and contemporary concert band repertoire. The UM Wind Ensemble will kick off the weekend with a concert on Friday night, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Palmer Auditorium. The participants will also have an opportunity to hear UM’s chamber ensembles and enjoy pizza and jazz Saturday evening with the UM Jazz Ensemble.

Required musical excerpts will be taken from the Alabama Senior and Junior High All-State Audition List. They will be the same as the Shelby County All-County band requirements. Those who have been accepted, directors, and teachers may download the recommendation forms and a tentative schedule. * Directors and teachers ONLY may email a recommendation form. The Kodály method of music instruction begins with the singing voice-an instrument carried by every child. Using musical material found within the child’s culture, teachers who are trained in this approach focus on the development of musical skill through singing, solfege and rhythm syllables.
The Young Musicians’ Camp provides band, choir, guitar, and piano students, ages 11-18, with superior musical instruction combined with the fun and friendship of a great summer camp. A variety of ensemble and masters class experiences are conducted by University of Montevallo music faculty and guest artists. Evening activities include swimming, field sports, cook-outs, movies, and talent shows. Individual private instruction is also available in guitar, voice, piano and instruments for an additional fee. Camp scholarships are available for the musically gifted or for those who demonstrate financial need. All-State Band/Choir participants or piano students who placed in an AMTA sanctioned event may qualify for a YMC All-State/AMTA Scholarship. For those who did not participate in All-State or AMTA, a limited number of talent and need-based YMC General Scholarships are also available. The 2013 Woodwind Workshop will take place Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16. All events will be held in the Davis Music Building on the University of Montevallo Campus. This Workshop is open to all woodwind players (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon) grades 6 – 12. There will be two separate Woodwind Choirs, one for the younger students (generally grades 6-8) and one for grades 9-12, For an application use, 2013 WWW Application. The application fee is $40 (make checks payable to UM Foundation). For the chair placements that take place on Friday afternoon, the students will be asked to pace major scales and sight-read. No prepared music will be asked this year. Beginners are welcome and will learn much from this workshop. Even if you have only just begun playing this past fall, please join us. In addition to our regular schedule of recitals and clinics by professionals, we will be having a solo competition with a first and second and third place prize. For an application use 2013 WWW Solo Competition Application. Please note that you must register for the workshop in order to participate in the solo competition and you must have a signature of your private instructor or band director in order to compete. Please also note there is an extra $30 application fee with the competition. A complete schedule of events will be available on this site soon.
