Getting Started
SOME USEFUL "HOW TOS" FROM TECHNOLOGY SERVICES:
To access your UM email account for the first time you will need your username, UMID and Password. The username and UMID have been given to you by HR. The UMID is a unique 8-digit identification number assigned to you by the University. It is often referred to as your "M Number." You will need to create your own password. These instructions will take you through the steps to access your Exchange Email account.
Once your UM email account is set up you can configure it on an android device. You can view a shared calendar in Outlook 2010. You can configure your iPhone to access your UM faculty and staff email and calendar. The 2012 Faculty Technology Guide may answer further questions. For assistance between 8 and 5 on weekdays, call Technology Services at 205.665.6512.
GETTING AROUND
This is a friendly campus and most people are happy to give you directions. Or try the campus map.
HUMAN RESOURCES
A significant part of New Faculty Orientation (NFO) will be spent on HR-related issues. Individuals should be prepared to complete state and federal tax forms, make benefit elections, and provide identification to satisfy the federal I-9 form. The University does not require you to complete any “HR forms” prior to NFO; however, you may wish to prepare by visiting sites providing information on benefits, required forms, and the I-9.
The Office of Human Resources is located at 1031 Middle Street in the Puryear House. You may visit or call HR at 205.665.6055 for assistance.
ID CARD
Your UM ID Card serves as a swipe card for buildings and is used to check out books in Carmichael Library and gain access to recreational facilities in the SAC. It can also be used to prepay meals in the "caf."
To have your ID made you will need a temporary identification card (the "Blue Card") from HR, at 1031 Middle Street in the Puryear House. Take the Blue Card to the Photo Lab in Main Hall. (Use the entrance on the right as you face Main.) The Lab is open Monday through Friday from 8-5 but closes from 12-1. Call ahead to 205.665.6615 if you would prefer to have an appointment.
Photo IDs will also be made during New Faculty Orientation. You will be provided with your Blue Card at that time.
KEYS
You will need keys for your office, classrooms, and other internal spaces. Use the Key Request Form once you know your office assignment. (Check with your chair or dept secretary.) You will need to have the form signed by your chair and sent on to Public Safety at Station 6155. You will be notified by email when keys are ready.
