Funding Opportunities

FD&C administers sabbatical leaves and grant competitions, including research stipends for pretenured facultyResearch and Creative Projects grants, and grants to support course development, pedagogical experimentation, and integration of technology. In addition, faculty are eligible to compete for QEP lLlUMinate grants to support innovative approaches to information literacy instruction. Recipients of sabbatical leaves who seek assistance with research expenses are encouraged to apply for R&CP grants or to pursue external funding.

Spring 2013 Funding Opportunities

Title: Faculty Learning Communities (New!)
Description: Up to $1000 to support interdisciplinary learning communities of 8-12  faculty. FLCs are “groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis" (Etienne Wenger). Funds can be applied toward FLC expenses such as consultants, special events, materials and supplies (including software, books, and other printed materials), group travel, and refreshments. These grants are intended to promote collaboration across disciplines and colleges and to support shared inquiry.
Eligibility: All full-time and part-time faculty.

Title: Course Development Grants
Description: Up to $2000 to support development of new courses or redesign of existing courses. Preference given to proposals that promote interdisciplinary learning in the undergraduate curriculum (including the new ID minors – Environmental Studies, Game Studies and Design, Public Relations), incorporate high impact practices in General Education (GE) courses, or experiment with other learner-centered teaching methods in GE courses.
Eligibility: All full-time faculty.
Deadline: 18 January

Title: T&L Grants (formerly University Teaching Fellow grants)
Description: Up to $2000 to promote creative approaches to teaching and learning. Preference given to projects with the potential to strengthen teaching on campus beyond a given classroom or virtual learning space.
Eligibility: All full-time faculty.
Deadline: March 29

Title: Sabbatical Leave (for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015)
Description: Provide faculty with opportunities for professional development, scholarly pursuits, and professional and intellectual renewal. It is expected that these activities will result in improved teaching and professional performance, enhanced research and/or artistic activities, and a renewed capacity for service to the university.
Eligibility: Tenured faculty in 7th year (or more) of continuous full-time service since appointment at UM or since the end of their last sabbatical year.
