Didactic Program in Dietetics
The mission of the dietetics program is to
provide students with the concepts of the interdependence of
human nutrition and food in the health and behavior of
individuals and to provide a basic foundation of foodservice
management theories. The dietetics program at the University is
approved by the American Dietetic Association and meets the
requirements for a Didactic Program in Dietetics. Upon
graduation, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in
Nutrition and Wellness. Following graduation, students must complete an
American Dietetics Association approved dietetic internship to
become qualified to take the national examination to become a
registered dietitian.
Career Options
Registered dietitians are employed in a
wide variety of settings: hospitals, public health departments,
nursing homes/retirement centers, food service establishments,
private practice, colleges and universities, contract food
service companies, industry, professional sports teams,
commercial food service operations, and military service.
Professional Internship
Students graduating in dietetics pursue a
post-baccalaureate supervised internship or approved APA program
to be eligible to take the RD exam. Internships are available
throughout the U.S. and some are associated with graduate degree
programs. Faculty assist students to apply to internships best
suited to their needs and abilities.
Major Courses
In addition to the University of Montevallo
General Education core and Nutrition/Wellness
courses, the students must complete science requirements: basic
chemistry, biochemistry, human anatomy and physiology,
microbiology. Dietetics Requirements: foundations of foods;
introductory, intermediate, and advanced human nutrition; life
cycle and community nutrition, quantity foods, food service
systems management; experimental foods; diet therapy.
Minor Courses
Students in this program do not complete a
minor.
