Available FCS Scholarships


Recipients must be admitted to the University of Montevallo and have a declared concentration within the Family and Consumer Sciences major. If the scholarship criteria include financial need, the financial need status established by the Federal Processor-FAFSA www.FAFSA.ed.gov must be available to the Scholarship Committee at the time of award of the scholarship. Please find below a list of the scholarships available and the criteria for each. 

A.D. WALDEN HOME ECONOMICS SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS majors
County of Residence: Dale, Houston or Henry counties only
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): High school seniors or students currently enrolled
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; cumulative GPA >3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Yes; (Financial need will be reviewed first; scholarship will not be denied to qualified student if applicants with need do not meet criteria)
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; annually for 4 years or the completion of the baccalaureate degree.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS major or enrolled at UM.
Other Information:  Number of scholarships awarded yearly depends on amount of money available and number of students eligible.
BARBARA FITE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: FCS Ed Majors only
County of Residence: Not applicable
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Junior standing
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; cumulative GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: not applicable
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; it is renewable for 2 consecutive years, including first year of graduate study.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS Ed major 
Other Information: Award is $2,000.00/year.  No recipient will be eligible for more than $6,000.00.
COMER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS major
County of Residence: Any Alabama county
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Freshmen or transfers only
Academic Status: Applicant must be a Senior in a high school within the state of Alabama when award is made.
Community Service Required: Not applicable
** Financial Need Verification Required: YES; FINANCIAL NEED STATUS MUST BE ESTABLISHED, AVAILABLE AND VERIFIABLE  AT THE TIME AWARD IS MADE. 
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; it is renewable for 4 years.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS major enrolled in classes at UM.  Recipient must provide a copy of transcript to the Comer Foundation yearly. 
Other Information: Total award for 2003-2004 recipient was $15,000.00 or $3,750.00/year for 4 years.. Increases are made at the discretion of the Comer Foundation Board.
DOROTHY TARPLEY HOLMES SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS major
County of Residence: Etowah County only
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Not applicable
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; cumulative GPA >3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Not applicable
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; recipient must remain a resident of Etowah County.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS major or enrolled in classes at UM.

JOHNNIE CARLISLE ENDOWMENT
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS Major; preference for Dietetics
County of Residence: Not applicable
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Rising Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; cumulative GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Yes; financial need status must be verified at the time the award is made.
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; renewable annually upon request and attainment of minimum cumulative GPA > 3.00.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS major or enrolled in classes at UM.
Other Information: Minimum scholarship is $500.00;  if it is based on financial need, preference will be given to Dietetics.  
JOSEPHINE COOK BRUISTER SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS Major
County of Residence: Not applicable
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Currently enrolled rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Yes; financial need status must be verified at the time the award is made.
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria: Yes; renewable annually upon request and attainment of minimum cumulative GPA > 3.00.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an FCS major or enrolled in classes at UM.

LOIS ACKERLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

MARY CORNELL SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Interior Design majors only

Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Junior standing with internship scheduled during the year of award. 
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Not applicable
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria:  Not renewable; May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered an Interior Design major or enrolled in classes at UM.
Other Information:  Internship must be scheduled in the year of the award; recipient must exhibit scholarship, assertiveness, possess a professional attitude and appearance; project positive  image of FCS Interior Design.
MARY LARKIN SCHOLARSHIP IN HOME ECONOMICS EDUCATION
  Majors Eligible: FCS Ed majors only

Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer):  Undergraduates/5th year masters students during the year of internship; traditional masters students.
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00

  Majors Eligible: Preferably Dietetics; other FCS majors

Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer):  Full time Freshman, transfer or currently enrolled student. 
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required: Not applicable
Financial Need Verification Required: Yes; financial need status must be verified at the time the award is made.
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria:  Recipient must be a full time degree seeking Dietetics student; maintain a good academic record; demonstrate leadership, citizenship, moral character, and human values.  May be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered and FCS major or enrolled in classes UM.

WG AND FLOY ABBOTT SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHILD & FAMILY
  Majors Eligible: Child & Family Studies majors only

Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer): Freshmen; if Freshmen not identified, transfer student will be considered. 
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00
Community Service Required:  Record of community service will be factor in selection. 
Financial Need Verification Required: Yes; financial need status must be verified at the time the award is made.
Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria:  Not renewable; may be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered a Child & Family Studies  major or enrolled in classes at UM.

VIOLA CLAYBROOKE HOME ECONOMICS SCHOLARSHIP
  Majors Eligible: Any FCS major
County of Residence: Not applicable
Required Class ( i.e. Freshman/transfer):  
1ST: Post-baccalaureate students in FCS;
2ND: Graduate student in FCS Ed.; 
3RD: Undergraduate student in FCS.. 
Academic Status: Scholastic excellence; GPA > 3.00 on all course work at UM.
Community Service Required: Not applicable

Renewal Revocation/Status/Criteria:  Yes; renewable provided the holder maintains academic status required for the scholarship; scholarship in not renewed automatically; application for renewal is required. may be revoked if academic standards are not upheld or the student is no longer considered a Child & Family Studies  major or enrolled in classes at UM.

*Eligibility for any FCS scholarship includes a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00, unless specified by the donor.
** Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and forward it to the Federal Processor.  The FAFSA is available after January 1st every year from your school’s guidance office, the UM Student Financial Services, Station 6050, University of Montevallo, Montevallo, AL 35115, or you may file a FAFSA on the Internet by accessing www.FAFSA.ed.gov. The Federal Processor will not process an FAFSA received after June 30th.
