Faculty Senate

October 14, 2005

 

Call to Order:  Michael Patton called the meeting to order at 2:05 pm.

 

Members Present:  Misty Bennett, Jason Cooper, Charlotte Daughhetee, Michelle Duran-McClure, Sherry Ford, Brook Miller, Michael Patton, Cindy Tidwell, Eric Vaccarella, Samantha Webb, Jill Wicknick

 

Approval of September 30, 2005 Minutes:   Samantha Webb moved that the minutes be approved, Brook Miller seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

 

President’s Report:  Michael Patton will be meeting with Dr. McChesney in the coming weeks to discuss possible implementation of the policy recommendations suggested by Faculty Senate last year.

 

Committee Reports:

  • Faculty Salary Administration Policy-This committee will look into the types of institutions UM compares itself to and how other institutions determine adjunct pay.
  • Bookstore Committee-Charlotte Daughhetee should have information to report by the next faculty senate meeting.  In addition to the bookstore questions that have already been forwarded to the bookstore committee, senators asked that the committee clarify the policy regarding the purchase of supplies (other than books) at the bookstore.

 

Liaison Reports:

Old Business:

  • Faculty Handbook-Michael Patton reported that the handbook is being moved onto the policy pages on the web.
  • Faculty Senate Survey-Jason Cooper will work on putting the results of last year’s survey on e-reserves.

 

New Business:

  • Web Page/Webmaster-Brook Miller reported on ideas for a proposal to enhance web page flexibility and webmaster autonomy.  The senate discussed potential solutions and Brook Miller, Charlotte Daughhetee and Misty Bennett will meet with appropriate university officials on the web page issue before the next senate meeting.
  • Pre-tenure Leave-Jill Wicknick and Cindy Tidwell are working on a proposal for cost effective ways that the university could offer leave time to support junior faculty research and writing efforts. 
  • Presidential Search Advisory Committee-senators reported faculty concerns about the make up of the committee and the process.  The senate is drafting a letter to the committee that will include the concerns that have been raised by faculty. 
  • College Night Documentary-the senate discussed the potential positive PR that could result from a documentary about college night.  College night is a unique tradition and is the type of activity that the University of Montevallo should be highlighting. 
  • International Faculty-Samantha Webb reported that she was looking into the university’s policy on the hiring of international faculty. 
  • Adjunct Pay-the senate discussed the low pay that adjuncts receive and several ideas on how adjuncts could be compensated at a higher rate.  The senate will poll faculty with a brief email survey on issues related to adjuncts. 

 

Announcements:  The next faculty senate meeting is October 28th, 2005 in the Merrill room.

 

Adjournment:  Samantha Webb moved that the senate adjourn, Cindy Tidwell seconded and the motion passed unanimously.  The meeting adjourned at 3:31 pm.
