Faculty Senate

November 19, 2004

Call to order:  the meeting was called to order at 2:07 pm

Members Present:  Patton, Daughhetee, Miller, Puleo, Manning, Callaghan, Wacker, Bennett, Webb, Cooper, Martin, Parker, one guest was present.

Approval of Previous Minutes:  Kelly Wacker moved that the minutes from the October 1, 2004 meeting be approved.  Brook Miller seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

President’s Report:  Michael Patton raised the following issues.

  • Academic Dishonesty and the student grievance process - The senate discussed the prosecution process for academic dishonesty cases.  The issue of students filing grievances in response to prosecution was also discussed.  The student grievance policy generated by Faculty Senate two years ago was presented.  Michael Patton will take this policy to his next meeting with the president and ask for clarification of the current status of  the student grievance process.
  • Faculty Lounge - Problems related to the availability of the faculty lounge were discussed.  Stephen Parker has donated a microwave.  The Faculty Senate will host a reception to officially open the lounge early in the Spring semester.
  • Adjunct Issues - Adjunct concerns were raised.  The possibility of a Faculty Senate liaison to the adjunct faculty was considered.

Committee Reports:  The following committees had updates

  • SAC Issues - Charlotte Daughhetee met with Dr. Glenda Isenhour concerning SAC issues.  The current policies regarding membership and access will remain unchanged.
  • Faculty Survey - data from last Spring will be examined at a future meeting.  New items concerning adjuncts, SAC, and salary/benefits concerns will be added.

Liaisons Reports:  The following liaisons had reports.

  • OSP - Samantha Webb has contacted the OSP and will be added to the mailing list.

Old Business:  None

New Business:

  • Brook Miller reported on the ACUFP meeting.  Attendees were encouraged to join the Higher Education Partnership, become more aware about the legislative process in Montgomery, and to be more intentional about making local legislators aware of campus concerns and needs.  Regarding continuity, other senates have longer terms for presidents and a president-elect position.  Other institutions have a later withdrawal/drop date than UM.  Faculty were also advised to raise their community profile through community service.
  • Based on faculty feedback, Michael Patton will recommend the purchase of Turnitin.com

Announcements:  The next Faculty Senate meeting will be on December 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm in the Merrill Room.

Adjournment:  Samantha Webb moved to adjourn, Misty Bennett seconded, the motion passed unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 3:17 pm.
