April 16, 2004

MEMBERS PRESENT

Alexander, Hamilton, Hardig, Manning, Motii, Parker, Powers, Puleo, Scott, Spicer, Truss, Wacker.

CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order at 2:05 pm.

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES

Minutes of the April 2, 2004 meeting were approved.

COMMITTEE, SUBCOMMITTEE AND SPECIAL PROJECT REPORTS

Faculty Satisfaction Survey
There are sixty-three responses to date.  The deadline will be extended to next Friday.

Convocation/Commencement Committee
The Subcommittee on Convocation and Commencement Policies and Procedures made three recommendations as provided on the handout.  The Senate voted to accept the recommendations with revisions.

Sabbatical Policies
The Faculty Senate Report on UM Sabbatical Policy was summarized.  Establishment of sabbaticals for junior faculty was discussed and it was noted that administrative acceptance of this recommendation would send the message that the university is committed to the professional development of the faculty.

Faculty Salary Administration Policies
President Parker provided working notes from his meeting with Dr. Seelbach.

Budget
The Faculty Senate voted to accept the Budget Report with the recommendations that it be sent to the faculty and future Senates continue to build budget data.

Academic Policies
The Academic Policies - Excused Absences report and conclusions were reviewed.  A motion was made to accept the report and send it to Administration.

LIAISONS

Montevallo Chamber of Commerce
The committee will continue to inventory town and gown links.  The city of Montevallo recently developed a web site and they will hire a student to continue maintenance of the site. 

OTHER

Adjunct Positions
President Parker distributed a draft letter that will be sent to Dr. McChesney. 
The Faculty Senate voted unanimously to accept the content of the letter with final revisions and send the letter forward.

Faculty Assembly
There will be a Faculty Assembly next Wednesday, April 21.

Committee Recommendations
Forty-seven people are rotating off committees.  Mary Horton has a list of committees.  President Parker encouraged Senators to solicit volunteers for the Senate.

Elections/Transitions/Celebrations
Elections for next year’s Senate will occur at each of the College meetings.
The Faculty Senators for next year will attend the next Faculty Senate meeting on April 30 and this Senate will elect the next President.
