World-Wide Web Pages

In order to encourage mutual sharing of information, creativity, diversity, and technical knowledge within the campus community and beyond, the University offers to authorized users of computing resources the use of its facilities for presenting information on the World Wide Web. This policy is intended to ensure that official University material seen by persons outside the University is accurate, consistent and approved through appropriate administrative channels. All users of World Wide Web servers at the University are required to abide by and comply with all state and federal laws governing copyrights and trademarks. Links to commercial entities must be related to the University’s mission and must not imply endorsement by the University.

University Web Pages

All official University electronic presentations must support the University's mission and be approved by the vice president/division head who has administrative responsibility for the area presented on a Web Site. An official document or publication is one that purports to represent the University and its official activities, programs and departments and not individual University faculty, staff, or students.

Individual Web Pages

Individual Web pages presented via University computer resources may contain information on the research and other activities and interests of individuals, samples of original creative work, and links to other sources of information on these topics. Student Web pages may serve as resumes or portfolios that may be viewed by prospective employers.

Authors of Web pages must avoid the use of inflammatory or offensive language and symbols in their individual pages. Individual Web pages must not contain violent material or provide links to sites that contain such material. Individual Web pages must not violate applicable export laws and regulations, must not be used for commercial purposes or personal financial gain or benefit, must not constitute copyright or trademark infringements, and must not violate any other federal, state, or local laws. Because individual Web pages are the intellectual property of the individual, authors of such pages must refrain from representing their pages as an official University publication. Use of University insignia, registered trademarks, seals, and/or logos is prohibited and standard disclaimers are required.

Individual Web pages are subject to all applicable provisions of this and other applicable institutional policies. The University may provide resources for Web pages, but it takes no responsibility for the individual opinions expressed therein. However, it reserves the right to monitor content and to terminate access to any pages that are not in compliance with this policy.

The Office of Computer Services and the Director of Public Relations are responsible for maintaining detailed Web guidelines, standards and practices; for disseminating this information to faculty, staff, and students; and for monitoring their effectiveness.
