Sorting Out UM’s New Recycling Program

Big blue recycling containers are being placed in common areas in most buildings around campus as part of the new UM/City of Montevallo recycling partnership.  Please sort recyclable materials into one of the three containers designated for paper, #1 plastic (drink bottles), or aluminum cans. Lids can be left on plastic bottles, but anything that contains food or beverage should be placed into the trash. Small classroom recycling containers should only be used for paper.

Please do not put plastic bags in any of the containers.  Please empty shredder bags into the containers and then reuse the plastic bag when possible.

Please no food products.  That includes pizza boxes and all drink cups.

Please do not place any cardboard in the paper containers.  If you fill a cardboard box, please dump it into the paper container and either reuse the box or place it near the recycling cans for the University staff to pick up.

In addition, the new Montevallo Recycling Center accepts glass, #2 plastics, scrap metal, and cardboard. All items taken to the Recycling Center must be sorted and must be removed from plastic bags, which cannot by recycled by the Center. The Center is located at 1361 Spring Creek Rd. in Montevallo.
