Alabama's Public Liberal Arts University

ES 400: Senior ES Independent Study (1-4 Credit Hours)

The Environmental Studies Program’s Senior Independent Study class puts what you’ve learned into practice in experiential learning, internship, service-learning, field study, or individual research.  ES 400 students create their own individual projects co-directed by two UM faculty members from different disciplines, and topics will vary based on the interests of the student and current opportunities from sponsoring agencies.  Your independent study must integrate academic scholarship and research with field work.

Prior to midterm of the semester before taking ES 400, you must fill out a Prospectus Form for your project and submit it to two faculty advisors for approval.

OVERVIEW

ES 400 students will:

--ask two faculty members to participate as advisors before taking class

--submit Prospectus Form detailing proposal

--do requisite hours of field work, study, and/or service

--meet regularly with faculty advisors

--write interdisciplinary benchmark report on completed project

--deliver presentation on project at end of semester
