Travel

The English Department has a rich tradition of study abroad and general interest trips, serving students and members of the community. We've traveled to England, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and South Africa. Plans are now being made for a trip to James Joyce's Ireland.

Undergraduate Research

If there's a literary topic that you're passionate about and want to investigate more closely than you can in a regular course, you can register for research credits and receive funding for your project through the College of Arts and Sciences. Our students regularly present their work at UM's Undergraduate Research Day and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Recent projects include creative work, and research on Shakespeare's plays, Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, Shelley's poetry, and Don DeLillo's novels.

Writing Awards

Student writers have many opportunities to enter writing competitions. Whether you write poetry, fiction or non-fiction, you'll find venues to present your work and win cash prizes. Our writing awards are the President's Award for Excellence in Writing, the Carmichael Library Book Review Award, the Harbert Writing Center Prose and Poetry Competition, and the Robert Jeremy Lespi Poetry Fellowship.
