English Department

Kathryn R. King, Ph.D.

I joined the English Department after receiving a PhD from Emory University in 1988.  I teach a variety of writing and literature courses, mostly British, some of my favorite areas being women’s writing traditions, gender and sexuality in the long eighteenth century, satire, the eighteenth-century novel, and South African literature.

My research interests at present center on the life, texts, and career of Eliza Haywood (1693?-1756).  I am currently working on two book-length studies, the first a partly biographical monograph tentatively entitled “Men’s Place in Haywood’s World” with sections on Aaron Hill, Richard Savage, Henry Fielding and others, the second a study of her scandal fiction and the beginnings of celebrity voyeurism.
