From time to time, students and adults alike encounter life obstacles that simply can’t be overcome alone. Counselors can provide opportunities for students and clients to gain self-awareness, analyze problem situations, gain new perspectives, and explore behavioral choices. And for those who are looking to extend their studies, UM’s master’s degree in Counseling can position you for a successful career in three degree areas: Clinical Mental Health counseling, School counseling, or Couple, Marriage, and Family counseling. All degree tracks are certified by the prestigious Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs. Additionally, successful completion of the master’s degree qualifies graduates to take the exam that leads to licensure as a Professional Counselor in Alabama.
Clinical Mental Health
UM’s degree track in Clinical Mental Health counseling is currently the only CACREP accredited clinical mental health program in Alabama, so you can rest assured that your curriculum will be challenging and thorough. If you’re preparing for a career at a mental health center, substance abuse treatment facility, hospital, or any other similar setting, UM will have you prepared to help those in our community who are unable to help themselves.
Couple, Marriage & Family
Relationships within couple, marriage, and family units can face times of tension and crisis. In such times, counselors can provide a sounding board, mediation, and guidance for those willing to work towards relational stability. Graduate students in UM’s Couple, Marriage & Family counseling track will draw from a body of research-based knowledge and “best practices” in counseling techniques in order to provide assistance to those who are facing obstacles. Additionally, graduates are eligible to pursue licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in Alabama.
Teaching can be hard when students are distracted by learning difficulties, home problems, and other life stressors. School counselors can provide an invaluable resource to classroom teachers and school districts. UM’s School Counseling degree track will prepare you to provide assistance to elementary and secondary students in order to help them grow and succeed. In addition to eligibility for the LPC credential, the School Counseling program leads to a recommendation for Alabama Class A certification in Counseling and Guidance.
