The Deaf Studies Minor is intended for students interested in an introduction to the language and culture of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Required Courses: Students must take all of these required courses.
CSD 205 Manual Communication
2 Credit hours
Introduction to manual communication emphasizing
correct production of manual alphabet and basic sign
language vocabulary. Includes a philosophy of total
communication..
(Requirement may be waived with consent of instructor
upon evidence of equivalent skill in sign language).

CSD 300 American Sign Language
3 Credit hours
Basic vocabulary and linguistic structures of
American Sign Language. History and culture of the Deaf
community. Prerequisite: CSD 205 or consent of the
instructor. Offered
Fall and Spring Semester.

307 Manually Coded English
3 Credit hours
Receptive and expressive sign language skills
using fingerspelling, Signing Exact English
and Contact Signing. Prerequisite: CSD 205 and
CSD 300. Offered Fall and Spring Semester.
CSD 390 Psychology and Education of the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing
3 Credit hours
Psychological social and educational development
of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing across
the lifespan. Offered Fall Semester.

375 Auditory Education and Strategies for Deaf and Hard
of Hearing Students
3 Credit hours
Auditory
education and strategies for the classroom. Use of
amplification and current research will be discussed.
Offered Spring Semester.

378 Expressive Communication Strategies for Deaf and
Hard of Hearing Students
3 Credit hours
Classroom
integration of formal and informal strategies for
developing expressive communication skills.
Prerequisite: CSD 375. Offered Fall Semester.
CSD 398 Deaf Culture 3 Credit hours
This course will explore issues related to Deaf culture. Offered Fall
Semester.
